Why Your Hair Is Shedding More This Season — And What Your Scalp Is Trying to Tell You

A trichology-informed guide for Hong Kong’s changing weather.
As Hong Kong shifts into cooler, drier air, many people suddenly notice:
- more strands on the pillow
- increased shedding in the shower
- an itchy, tight, or more sensitive scalp
Seasonal change is one of the most common reasons hair behaves differently this time of year, especially in Hong Kong where humidity, temperature, and indoor AC fluctuate rapidly.
Here’s the simple, trichology-backed explanation.
Your Scalp Reacts to Weather Changes Before Anything Else
The scalp is living skin.
When the weather flips from humid to dry, it struggles to stabilise. This leads to:
- overproduced oil (a protective response)
- dryness and flaking from humidity drops
- itchiness or tightness as the scalp barrier weakens
These shifts push more hair follicles into their “resting” phase, some poeple call it seasonal shedding.
Hong Kong’s unique trigger
AC-heavy indoor environments + sudden cool snaps = rapid moisture loss from the scalp, many people notice shedding from late autumn onward.
Shedding to pay attention to:
- Consistently losing over 100-150 hairs daily
- Round or widening patches
- Red, inflamed, or painful scalp
- Sudden thinning + fatigue or other symptoms
- and so on
